Pop art icon Robert Indiana has called Vinalhaven, Maine home for more then three decades. He has lived full-time on the island, twelve miles off the coast, since 1978. Blouin ARTINFO’s editor-at-large Benjamin Genocchio traveled to speak with Indiana about his work and get a tour of his home and studio.
The space itself is full of the artist's work, including several of his signature “LOVE” sculptures in rooms throughout the four-story home. “Indiana…I collect Indiana,” the 84-year-old artist told Genocchio. Pop art is a term that Indiana himself eschews when describing his work. Instead, he refers to himself as a sign artist, fond of words and typography.
Next month, the Whitney will present an Indiana retrospective. “Robert Indiana: Beyond Love” opens on September 26.
