NEW YORK, NY (September 2015) – Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce its exclusive representation of acclaimed photographer Robert Polidori in North America. Known for his meticulously detailed, large-scale photographs, Polidori will have his first solo-exhibition at Paul Kasmin Gallery in 2016.
Robert Polidori is widely recognized for his career-spanning work at the Château de Versailles, which begun in the 1980s after he secured an exclusive authorization to document the restoration of the seventeenth-century palace. Most recently, he has been working extensively on his ‘Dendritic Cities’ series. Taking its name from the branching extensions of a cell structure, Polidori adapts the term to describe the rampant and spectacular growth of auto-constructed urban centers that have appeared in the last decades in cities such as Amman, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro.
Polidori's first love was avant-garde film, and his experience working as an assistant to Jonas Mekas at the Anthology Film Archives in New York vitally shaped his approach to photography. He felt compelled to come to New York in 1969 after having attended a screening of Michael Snow's masterpiece, Wavelength. This cinematic "Monument to Time," essentially comprised of a 45-minute zoom shot across a room, was seminal in Polidori's aesthetic development. His examination of the iconic and psychological meanings of the room brought him to consider photographic stillness as the ideal medium to portray rooms as metaphors and vessels for memory – places marked by the signatures of past and present lives. The images in his recent Hotel Petra series illustrate how human interventions and the passing of time are well inscribed on the surfaces of walls.
Robert Polidori (b. 1951) currently lives and works in Santa Monica. In 1998 he won the World Press Award and he has twice won the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography (1999 and 2000). Polidori was a staff photographer for The New Yorker from 1998 - 2006. He has published over 15 photo books, most recently Chronophagia and the two-volume book, Rio with Marc Ferrez. These follow the three-volume compilation of his pictures of Versailles, Parcours Muséologique Revisité (Steidl, 2009) and After The Flood (Steidl, 2006), which recorded the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The artist’s major solo exhibitions include a mid-career retrospective at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Fotografias at the Instituto Moreira Salles, and After the Flood at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. His work is held in numerous collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris.
